Welcome
to the St Just Amateur Boxing Club History Page

In April 2005 Mike Howard saw teens hanging around with nothing to do.
As a young man he trained with the now defunct Pz boxing club, and always had an interest in boxing

The club developed from an idea put to his Dad over coffee in his parents kitchen about forming a club in St. Just. His father, Paul Howard, contacted the ABA to find out how to start a club while Mike spoke to people to find out interest.
A committee was formed, an open day held at Cape Cornwall school and the club started in September the same year.
The early training took place in the gym at Cape Cornwall school but it soon became apparent that the premises were not really suitable.
The vicar of St. Just parish church was approached and we were able to rent the church school room and moved there in early 2006

The town of St. Just rallied around and the council gave a grant of 500 pounds.
Since then Paul Howard has raised over ten thousand pounds for the club with the help of Bernie Hall at JYCP in St. Just.
This means we have the best quality kit that is available, our own sparring ring and everything that a well equipped boxing club should have.

The club chairman Mike Howard trained at the Boxing academy Bristol and has qualified as an England ABA coach.
Mick Jackson, Tim O Sullivan, Martin James and Chris Turner are all qualified as assistant coaches at the academy and are C.R.B. checked

The club works closely with the police and social services and young people with problems have been recommended to join the club.
We have over 60 active members who train at the Church school rooms St. Just every Monday and Thursday. From 6-9

The club is tightly disciplined and the students learn anger management, confidence, self discipline and are advised on health and fitness as well as the art of boxing.

There is a strong bond between members, who are able to get in the ring and box and then come out with handshakes and congratulations to each other on performance.

We have more girls than any other club in Cornwall and some of the girls have had further training at the English Boxing Academy in Bristol with a view to joining the women’s Cornwall boxing squad.

They are:
Leah Wolfenden
Sophie Thomas
Hannah Williams
Kirsty Howard
Leonie Denning

We have ten young boxers who are skilled enough to take part in competitions
Four of whom are particularly gifted
They are:
Josh Barr
Dean Morris
Chris Turner
Ben Tucker

All our young boxers have potential and we fully expect to see more than one from the club boxing for Cornwall and possibly their country.

We have a social side to the club and hope in the future to take all our members, over eleven years, to Dartmoor for an adventure holiday.
This will depend on funding as the club tries to keep expense for members to the bare minimum.

Dan Turner, who is father to eight year old Ashley, one of our younger members said that his son thinks the club is brilliant the cost £1 per session more than reasonable and he also said Ashley is more disciplined at home and at school than before he joined.
This appears to be true of all our members.
Club secretary Katrina Howard works at Cape Cornwall School and can see the difference boxing has made to the pupils who train with us.
Unfortunately we have outgrown our present premises and are seeking a more permanent home.
We have been asked to leave the church rooms at the end of July 2007 which we will endeavour to do.
